Open Source Java

Now the folks at Apache have started a new project: Harmony which aims to be an open source implementation of the Java Virtual Machine.

I think it was about time something like this happened. The innovation in the Java world has been tremendous, but all of it comming from the community, not from Sun. The great open source frameworks like Spring, Hibernate, Struts are standard components on a lot of applications.

By having an open source JVM innovation will be fueled at a faster pace, since history has shown how successfull open source projects move faster than proprietary software.

Hopefully Sun embraces this evolution for the Java language, and hope they don't miss on the other opportunities they have been neglecting... like joining the Eclipse foundation.
